Full disclosure – I’m not really very “sporty” so I don’t have any personal experience with Fitness Trackers (I was more excited about the fact that Apple offers a watch with a Hermès strap than I was about the actual features of the watch) but I know that people love ’em so I figured it was time to blog about them 🙂
From what I can tell, there are basically three “big boys” in the Fitness Tracker market – Apple, Fitbit and Garmin. Each offer a lot of the same features – heart rate and fitness monitoring, step counting, SmartPhone pairing… and then they sort of “specialize” in certain areas.
Apple – the Apple watch definitely has the cool-factor and is essentially an iPhone strapped to your wrist which means that in addition to being an actual watch that tells you the time, it buzzes when you receive a message or email, provides turn-by-turn directions, allows you to access apps more easily, offers tap-to-pay, let’s you talk/text/listen to voicemails, allows you to listen to music, has all sort of built-in fitness trackers, it can also acts as remote control to certain home devices…basically it kind of does everything.
Fitbit – the most tech-less of the three, Fitbit aims to give you a deeper understanding your body and your health. It recognizes your activities with SmartTrack, tracks your sleep quality, shows you whether you’re in fat burn, cardio or peak zone, provides daily heart rate insight, and tries to keep you motivated with achievement badges every time you reach a new goal of milestone. Certain models will pair with your start phone to alert you when you receive a message or a call.
Garmin – while still very tech-focused (you can use your Garmin watch to play music and pay for your purchases) it seems to be a little bit more outdoorsy/sport focused and comes pre-loaded with 15 different sports apps including yoga, running, swimming and strength training. They also make a separate Golf model which can tell you yardage, give you an overview of the hole you’re about to play and keep track of your score among other things.
So depending on your lifestyle, needs and of course budget – there is a Fitness Tracker out there for you (even all us non-sporty people). Here are some of my top 5 picks, all available at Coquitlam Centre.
