On Trend: Platform Slip-Ons

Ahhh March. That weird, it could snow, it could rain, it could be sunny time of the year. It’s definitely not time to break out the sandals but there are some days when it’s not really boot weather either (although, TBH I wear ankle boots all year long). Sneakers are always a great option but there are times when you need something fancier than a sneaker (i.e. work) but you don’t quite want a flat (which are sometimes to thin to be comfortable)…enter slip-ons a sneaker/flat hybrid.

A slip-on with a slight platform/thick sole is just as comfortable as a sneaker but is much easier to dress up making it a little bit more versatile. I’m also not a huge fan of black sneakers (other than Converse) so for me, a black slip-on fills that “I need a casual black shoe” void.

Wear with almost any type of ankle-grazing pants from jeans (skinny, boyfriend, mom, distressed, raw hem..) to tapered joggers, to trousers (skinnies or tapered), to leggings (note: leggings NOT yoga pants). You can even pair them denim skirts and t-shirt dresses. Basically if you’re pairing with pants, they should be tight fitting around the ankle (so nothing flared or bootcut) and if you’re pairing with a skirt or a dress, keep it somewhat casual (denim skirt and t-shirt good, pencil skirt and silk blouse bad).

Here are some of my favourite slip-ons, all available at Coquitlam Centre.

VANS Asher Marshmellow Slip-Ons

Yes, these are the same canvas upper, waffle soled VANS you remember. Pair with distressed denim and a graphic t-shirt for a super casual vibe or with white skinnies and a sweater for a more polished look.

Available at SoftMoc $69.99*

Franco Sarto Hailie 2 Slip-Ons

Sport-inspired yet fashion-ready. I think you could totally wear these ones to work with a cute pair of ankle-grazing dress pants (unless your work is business-formal of course) with a sweater or an oversized blouse. Leather and man-made upper.

Available at Hudson's Bay $120*

Brash Perforated Crave Slip-Ons

A great sunny day option, these perforated slip-ons are available in one of this season's hottest colours and pair beautifully with denim.

Available at Payless ShoeSource $29.99*

Steve Madden Ecentric-Q Slip-On

These quilted faux leather slip-ons definitely check all my boxes when it comes to finding that perfect casual not-really-boot-but-not-quite-sandal weather shoe. Keep these ones for the weekend though, I think they're probably a little too casual for most workplaces.

Available at Town Shoes $80*

Stephona Slip-On

Another great pair for work. With a leather upper and a slightly wedged paltform, these are definitely a wear with anything from dress pants to jeans type of shoe. They also come in black if metallic isn't your thing (but it should be because metallic shoes are everything).

Available at Aldo $95*
