In case you haven’t heard – summer 2017 is all about gingham! This classic summer print is popping up on dresses, blouses, skirts, shorts, pants, swimwear…for a feminine yet laid-back, carefree vibe that’s anything but fussy.
According to Wikipedia, the origins of gingham are a little checkered (see what I did there). Many different countries from India to Malaysia to Africa have used gingham for centuries and there doesn’t seem to be any real consensus as to where it was first developed. It is generally accepted though, that gingham was brought to Europe and the Americas in the 17th century and since then, it has quickly become a perennial fabric. While there’s nothing wrong with going a little retro – it is possible to make gingham look modern and chic with just a few simple tips.
Here are my top tips on how to wear gingham without looking like a 50s housewife (not that there’s anything wrong with that):
- 1. Pair with bright colours/accessories. A bright clutch, bright belt, bright blazer…
- 2. Pick a piece with some attitude (ruffles, ruching, bows, off-the-shoulder)
- 3. Pair with block heel sandals, slides, mules or runners. Stay away from pumps.
- 4. Look for coloured gingham – pink, light blue, yellow…
- 5. Pair with uber on point pieces like cropped tops, high-waisted denim shorts, girlfriend jeans, blouses with statement sleeves, graphic t-shirts…
