Ok, I’m going to be VERY honest here – I don’t like floral prints. Or at least I don’t like floral prints on me. They’re just not my thing. However, I do think that they’re a nice way to sort of wake up your wardrobe and get you ready for Summer. So, what’s an anti-floral girl like me to do when it’s time to liven up my look for Spring? Why, go for reptile prints of course. I mean reptiles live in nature, flowers are found in nature…same same, right?
Reptile prints are actually super easy to wear. In general, pair them with neutral or nature-inspired colours (black, grey, white, beige, khaki green…) and you’re good to go. They never look precious, too mature or too young (which I think is one of my issues with florals) and add a little chic edge to your look.
If you’re unsure, I’d recommend starting with something a little flowy like paperbag-waist pants or a blouse, familiar like skinny jeans, or small like an accessory to ease yourself into this trend.
Why flowy? Because you’re less likely to feel self-conscious is something that isn’t form fitting. Also, while I applaud you if you’re brave enough to wear a fitted snakeskin dress, it isn’t a look that everyone can pull off stylishly.
Why familiar? It’s much easier to try a new trend if there’s something familiar about it. You already know how to wear and style skinny jeans so a pair of reptile-printed skinnies is not really that that much of a stretch.
Why small? Accessories like bags, shoes and belts let you play around with a trend without having to overly commit. You can also wear them with pieces you already own and feel good in.
And remember, reptile prints doesn’t just mean snakeskin. If snakeskin is too “out there” for you, there’s also crocodile which is essentially just a one-colour, more subtle version of a snakeskin texture.
If you’re ready to show skins some love this season, there are a ton of different options to choose from. Here are some of my top recommendations.
Ok so I know that reptile-printed pants may seem daunting but to be honest, they're actually super easy to wear. Pair them with a neutral top and shoes (black, white, beige, dusty rose, khaki green...) for a chic yet carefree Spring outfit.

If a reptile-printed dress is a little outside of your comfort zone, opt for something like a shirt dress that's super classic and extremely easy wearing as opposed to anything too fitted. Pair with pumps or mules for a day at the office or with flat sandals or sneakers for a more casual look.
Snakeskin Shirt Dress available at Reitmans $59.99*
I'm a huge fan of a statement shoe and a reptile-printed shoe definitely makes a statement! They're a great way to elevate a basic outfit and to ease yourself into the reptile trend. Add a pair of reptile shoes to a basic denim and white t-shirt combo and suddenly you're super on trend.
Slide Sandal available at Le Chateau $39.95*
Like shoes, a belt is a great way to add a hit of reptile to your look without having to really commit. Wear with blue or white denim (pants or skirt), use to cinch in your favourite shirt dress, or add a little edge to your black work trousers.
Snakeskin Belt available at RW&CO. $25.90*
There is something super classy and lady-like about a crocodile bag. I LOVE that this finish is readily available on a ton of different styles or bags. Wear with practically anything.
