How To: Tips for Completing Your Spring Capsule Wardrobe

Ok so you’ve gone through all your clothes and de-cluttered your closet, you’ve done your research, you’ve come up with your list of must-haves and you’ve gone through your remaining pieces and checked off the must-have pieces that you already own. Now ladies, it’s time to shop!

When purchasing the items to complete your capsule wardrobe it’s ok to buy fun, on-trend pieces to keep your wardrobe current, but shop in moderation. Avoid impulse purchases and only buy what fits your lifestyle, captures your heart and falls into your wardrobe vision.

Think quality over quantity. Splurge on those perfect pair of jeans that you know you will live in this season instead of buying four pairs of on-trend pants that maybe don’t fit as well. You’ll end up reaching for the classic, well-fitting pants way more often.

Don’t buy all your outstanding pieces at once. Once you’ve purchased a couple of pieces, take them home and play with them. See how they fit into your existing wardrobe. You might discover that you don’t need to buy as much as you thought. Above all else this is about creating YOUR perfect wardrobe, so make sure you buy what makes you happy!

If you need a little guidance, here are some of the pieces I recommend adding to your capsule, all available at Coquitlam Centre (click HERE for the full capsule)

A Black Camisole

While a chiffon camisole might seem a little dressy to be part of your everyday wardrobe, it's actually much more versatile than a basic stretch cotton cami. Pair with a pencil skirt and heels for a night out or with denim and white sneakers for casual yet polished look.

Available at Reitmans $34.50*

A White Camisole

Again, I recommend going slightly dressier with this piece (unless of course it really doesn't go with your lifestyle) because of it's extra styling potential.

Available at RW&CO $39.90*

A Basic White T-Shirt

I'm not sure if you can really get more versatile than a basic white t-shirt. Pair with denim, a blazer and booties for a polished put-together look, with denim and white sneakers for a casual day running around, with a pencil skirt and pumps for a cool-girl night look. The possibilities really are endless...

Available at Below the Belt $29.00*

A Graphic T-Shirt

Have fun with this one and buy whatever grabs your attention. I love me some Karl!

Available at Hudson's Bay $49*

A Striped T-Shirt

A striped t-shirt is one of those things that you can roll out of bed, throw on with a pair of jeans and still look like you've tried. I've opted for a slightly more business-casual version but any style works.

Available at Reitmans $39.90*

A Sweatshirt

This one might not be for everybody. Graphic sweatshirts are HUGE right now and as such, are a staple for many people. Not your thing? Skip it. Willing to give it a try? Treat it just like you would a sweater and pair it with denim, your black pants and even a skirt.

Available at Below the Belt $79*

A Crew Neck Sweater

If I'm being honest here, a crew neck sweater is not really my thing. They look great on lots of women - I am just unfortunately not one of those women. Give me a v-neck or even a good ole turtleneck any day. I will admit however that they do look better over button-up blouses and with skirts.

Available at Old Navy $39.94*

A Tunic Sweater

The great thing about a lightweight tunic sweater is that it's great over things like skinnies and leggings but it also works tucked into things like high-waisted skirts and trousers and since versatility is the name of the game - I would opt for a lighter knit here.

Available at H&M $24.99*

A Chambray/Denim Shirt

Chambray is essentially a soft, lightweight woven fabric that is similar to denim, but not quite denim (it has to do with the direction of the weave...). Either one works. Chambray is slightly more drapey, denim is more of a classic.

Available at GAP $64.95*

A White Button-Down Shirt

The great thing about a button-down shirt is that it is essentially 2 pieces in 1. Wear it buttoned up as a shirt or throw it over dresses and tanks as a light layer. I recommend a looser fitting boyfriend shirt for more versatility but you never can go wrong with a fitted classic.

Available at Old Navy $26.94*

A Neutral Silk Blouse

Ok so first off, it doesn't actually have to be silk. Any silky-type material will do. Also, choose the colour based on what works for you. A black blouse would be just as versatile as this white one as would a light pink, dark green, navy blue...

Available at H&M $39.99*

A Chunky Cardigan

Whatever you call it - chunky cardi, coatigan, cape - a heavy, open knit is a spring must-have. Wear it on its own on those warm spring days (if we ever get any) or layered under a jacket when you need a little extra warmth.

Available at GAP $74.95*

A Denim Jacket

I don't think you can ever really go wrong with a classic denim jacket. There's a reason that they never really seem to go out of style. Looking for something different? This season denim jackets are available in a bunch of different cuts from long and belted to oversized to sleeveless.

Available at GAP $79.95*

A Neutral Blazer

When choosing a blazer for your capsule, I would look for something that's slightly relaxed yet tailored so that it looks just as on-point with a pencil skirt and blouse as it does with jeans and a t-shirt.

Available at H&M $59.99*

A Leather Jacket

While leather has gone decidedly moto the last couple of years, there are a ton of different styles out there if a motorcycle jacket isn't your thing. Find what works for you and rock it with pride.

Available at Below the Belt $99*

A Wool Coat

Depending on where you live, this may or may not be a spring staple for you. I tend to always be cold so a lightweight wool coat is definitely on my must-have list (especially for March). If you're looking for a spring wool - look for a light grey or beige.

Available at Reitmans $169.90*

A Classic Trench

Every girl needs a trench coat. Camel not your thing? This season, stores are full of beautiful light pink trenches in addition to basic black and classic beige. When it comes to finding the perfect trench, make sure to try a bunch on. While double-breasted is certainly the most iconic (thanks Burberry), you might like the way a single-breasted coat hangs better.

Available at Hudson's Bay $220*

A Rain Coat

We live in Vancouver - enough said. While basic black is always an option, sometimes it's nice to add a little pop of colour. Nothing brightens up a rainy day like a bright yellow coat (ok other than actual sunshine).

Available at Old Navy $49.90*

A Midi Skirt

A midi skirt is one that falls somewhere between the knee and the calf. I prefer mine pleated and on the fuller side but there are lots of different options. Pair with sneakers and a crew neck sweater, with a silk blouse (tucked in of course) and pumps or a denim shirt and booties.

Available at H&M $49.99*

A Pencil Skirt

There's just something so feminine about a pencil skirt. When selecting a skirt for your capsule, make sure to take your lifestyle into consideration. Pencil skirts come in variety of fabrics and colours. I'm an above-the-knee, basic black with a bit of stretch kind of girl.

Available at Cleo $49.90*

A Denim Skirt

Much like everything else on this list, denim skirts come in a plethora of lengths, styles, cuts and washes. Some are distressed, some embellished and some have buttons running up the front. Pick the one that you think works the best for your lifestyle. I like this slightly longer one because it looks equally as chic with pumps as it does with sneakers.

Available at GUESS $79*

Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans are a must-have in my wardrobe. Yes I love my relaxed boyfriend jeans and my on-trend girlfriend jeans but I would not survive without my high-waisted, medium wash skinnies. I practically live in them (or I would if I was allowed to wear them to work). If skinnies aren't your thing that's totally ok, pick the pair that you feel most yourself in. Take your time, try on different fits and don't be afraid to splurge a little - if you're like me you will definitely get your money's worth.

Available at GAP $79.95*

Neutral Dress Pants

I am slightly obsessed with these pants. High-waisted, wide-legged white trousers? I mean...The great thing about wide leg trousers is that they can be dressed down a little easier than a more form fitting pair. Flowy pants with a cami?? So chic!

Available at Le Chateau $89.95*

Black Pants

Let your lifestyle determine your fabric choice here. Is your workplace and day-to-day life super casual? Maybe stretch leggings are the best way to go. Business casual? Choose a fabric that has a slightly dressier look to it.

Available at RW&CO. $59.90*

A Shirt Dress

A shirt dress is one of those pieces that is ridiculously easing wearing and transitions extremely well from day to night. I've worn mine with booties to work, with sneakers to run errands and with pumps to a wedding (to be fair, I did have to amp up the accessories to make it wedding-ready and it wasn't a super fancy wedding but still...).

Available at Plenty $95*

A LBD

Shocking I know! Honestly though, a LBD belongs in your capsule. Dress it up, dress it down, it will never disappoint. Spend some time on this one and find YOUR perfect dress. Sleeveless sheath, a-line with sleeves, short bodycon...pick whatever makes you feel like your most beautiful self.

Available at Le Chateau $99.95*

A Pair of Nude Heels

You may not reach for them as often as your go-to black pumps but when you need a nude shoe, you really need a nude shoe. I would opt for a more classic style that will see you through season after season.

Available at Aldo $80*

A Pair of Black Heels

I'm a basic pointed-toe stiletto heeled pump kind of girl but that doesn't mean you have to be! Block heels are huge right now and are just as versatile as a stilettos - plus they are way more comfortable. Shoes are something else I recommend spending a little bit more money on, well-made shoes just feel better.

Available at Town Shoes $130*

A Pair of White Sneakers

Ever since I got my first pair of white Keds back in elementary school, white sneakers have been a staple in my closet. While the make and model might have changed over the years - my love has not. Wear them with jeans, dresses, skirts...

Available at Town Shoes $105*

A Pair of Flats

Every woman needs at least one pair of flats. Try to find a pair with a bit of support and substance, your feet will thank you for it. I also recommend breaking them in throughly before attempting to wear them on an all-day shopping excursion (I may be speaking from personal, painful experience here).

Available at H&M $19.99*

A Pair of Booties

Beige booties are the perfect transitional footwear. Your foot is still completely covered for those rainy Vancouver days but the light colour means you can wear them with denim and black and still feel "springy". Beige not your thing? Try grey or khaki green.

Available at H&M $49.99*

A Shoulder Bag

I don't think I know anybody who doesn't own a bag with a long strap and I don't think I want to! A shoulder bag is just one of those things that all grown up ladies should own, unless I suppose you never go shopping, or out on the town or out anywhere in general. This is another one of those items that requires careful consideration and maybe a bit more of an investment. Find a bag with the right amount of pockets, space, embellishments for you and just buy it.

Available at GUESS $98*

A Classic Tote

For those times when you just have too much stuff! This season, handbag designers all suddenly had the brilliant idea of creating reversible bags with removable pouches which means it's like 3 bags in 1! Also, if you can, find one with a removable shoulder strap because at some point - you will need that strap.

Available at Hudson's Bay $168*

A Clutch

I LOVE a good clutch. Whether I'm in a dress or jeans, a clutch is my evening bag go-to. Looking for a hands-free option (because let's face it with your bag in one hand and your wine in the other, your movement is a wee bit cramped), look for a clutch with a removable shoulder strap. You could opt for basic black here but a bright clutch adds a sophisticated pop of colour to any outfit.

Available at Aldo $40*
