How To: Style Joggers

So what exactly are joggers? Well TBH they are really just the fashion world’s version of sweatpants. They have an elasticized or drawstring waist, are made from a comfortable material and are slightly loose fitting in the leg. They end either right at, or just above the ankle. Now I know that people have some very strong opinions on sweatpants (Karl Lagerfeld famously called sweatpants a “sign of defeat” and Jerry told George that sweatpants “tell the world you’ve given up”) but I doubt that even Karl would would consider joggers a fashion faux-pas (PS he now sells “trackpants” that retail for over $200 US).

I’m sure at some point we have all given up being social in order to stay home in our sweatpants. Thankfully now there are joggers, which we can wear out into the world without looking like we’ve given up. So let’s all watch and see how our ‘Girl in Focus’ Alicia Haque styles her joggers so that she can wear them out and about, to work, and yes, even for a night out.

Drawstring Joggers

Look for a pair in a slightly dressier material, like this pair in knit crepe, it'll make them much easier to dress up or down. Stay away from jersey. You also want them to hit just above your ankle bone and they should be fairly slim through the leg (not skin tight but not too loose).

Espadrilles

When selecting your casual shoe think more fashion than function. By that I mean choose a slide over a flip flop, a slip-on Vans or a pair of Stan Smiths over running shoes...basically stay away from anything too athletic. Espadrilles are a great choice this summer since they're EVERYWHERE!

Pumps

In order to pull off joggers at the office, your shoe needs to an obvious dress shoe. A pump, an oxford and a mule all fit the bill. You can get away with a loafer or a pointed-toe flat (please don't wear round-toe flats) as long as your top is dressier. Oh and add some jewellery, that always helps.

Strappy Sandals

Yes, you can totally wear your joggers for a night out. Since joggers keep you relatively covered up, opt for a shoe that shoes a little skin. A strappy sandal is the obvious choice here. Pair with a fitted or cropped top and statement accessories.
