Girl in Focus: Britney Gill

It’s that time again…no, no I don’t mean THAT time (although yes, the countdown to Christmas is on) – it’s time for a new ‘Girl in Focus’!

We’re very excited to introduce our new ‘Girl in Focus’ Britney Gill, a lifestyle photographer based in Vancouver, BC and the founder of Farmacie.

From December to February, follow Brit as she shows us some of the looks she’ll be rocking this season.

CeeCee: Hi Brit! Welcome to the Coquitlam Centre family! Why don’t we start by talking about what you do for a living.

Brit: I am a freelance lifestyle photographer + philanthropist when I can be!

CeeCee: What’s the best part about being a freelance lifestyle photographer?

Brit: Connecting with people of all ages, shapes and sizes in every corner of the world.

CeeCee: I’m so jealous that you get to travel to beautiful parts of the world for WORK! Besides your willingness to travel for your clients, what do you feel is your biggest strength as a photographer?

Brit: Connecting with people of all ages, shapes and sizes in every corner of the world.

CeeCee: What are you most excited about these days?

Brit: Hiring people to help support my business. I needed to lighten my work load in order to make a bigger impact with my business. I realized that I was playing a small game by trying to do it all on my own. Growing pains, EEEEk.

CeeCee: Good for you! It’s hard letting others in. So, other than growing your business, what are your next big life goals?

Britt: To buy a home and get studio space.

CeeCee: What is the best thing that happened to you this year?

Brit: I got to travel to many new cities and countries for work and explored with some amazing people. Connected with like-minded people all over the world and made a pretty amazing network of creatives and entrepreneurs (especially women) that I have and will continue to work with!

CeeCee: Sounds like you had quite the year! What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Brit: To build your business wide before you can afford it.

CeeCee: I like that. What are you guilty pleasures?

Brit: Chocolate, wine, pinterest and shopping 🙂

CeeCee: That pretty much sums me up too. What are your secret talents?

Brit: I snowboard, speak French and Spanish and can burp on command!

CeeCee: Hahaha. Tell us about Farmacie. What is it? Why did you start it?

Brit: Farmacie is a community of aware food citizens coming together to inspire change in our local food system. I created it fresh out of University to bridge the gap of food knowledge/awareness that I had gained throughout my education with your average food consumer who finds most of their information from facebook (more can be found on this story at FARMACIE.ca)

CeeCee: What do you hope to accomplish with Farmacie? What are your hopes for the food system?

Britt: WELLLLLL, there are many, but here are a few. That more people become connected to their food. That politics and food are less intertwined. That we stop treating food like a commodity since it is a basic human need. I hope that chemicals and food can be separated from the same sentences. I want an organic apple to be cheaper than a McDonald’s Cheeseburger. That hospitals have more of a budget to feed their patients than jails do and that everyone has equal access to sustainable, healthy food.

CeeCee: Those all sound like things that we shouldn’t have to hope for, they should all just be truths. Speaking of hope, where do you hope to be in 10 years?

Brit: I hope to be in a place where I have built a sustainable business where I have passive income. I also hope to have narrowed down and focused on a specific area where I can create the most profound impact on humanity. I know I am here to create impact but I sometimes get pulled away from my purpose here because it changes so often 🙂

CeeCee: Ok, let’s move on to fashion. How would you describe your style?

Brit: Tomboyish bohemian, classic, androgynous, natural fibred, minimal – trying to maintain a  high quality, classic, minimal closet with a touch of trends :). I’m also trying to move towards less stuff and more treasures.

CeeCee: Very cool. Who are your style icons?

Brit: MAJA WYH, Caroline De Maigret, Isabel Marant. Anyone with confidence and an epic personal uniform.

CeeCee: What style trend are you excited to try this season?

Brit: Metallic skirt 🙂

CeeCee: What’s your must-have item this season?

Brit: A grandpa-style coat for sure.

CeeCee: What are your favourite Coquitlam Centre retailers?

Brit: Aritzia, Privilege, Below the Belt, Hudson’s Bay, GUESS.

CeeCee: I think I already know the answer to this but, what are your go-to accessories?

Brit: Hats, scarves, mix and match rings acquired from my travels, mix and match bangles acquired from my travels.

CeeCee: What would you never wear?

Brit: Pink 🙁

CeeCee: What is the best fashion secret you’ve ever learned?

Brit: To tailor your clothes and learn to dress your own body. Don’t follow trendy cuts and fits if they don’t work for your curves.

CeeCee: If you had to wear one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Brit: A button-down relaxed fit boyfriend shirt, comfy jeans and flip flops.

CeeCee: What are your favourite beauty products?

Brit: I try to use all natural products such as oils and butters. I make my own products a lot and use AESOP as well. I go to The Soap Dispensary to blend all of my own products! When it comes to makeup, I have a hard time shifting to all natural BUT I like Cover Girl mascara, Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer and concealer, NARS bronzer. I really like to keep it simple. A signature look for me would be some black liner on my top lid and that is it!

CeeCee: Black eyeliner is my make-up must have as well. What’s your beauty trick for getting out the door fast and still looking great?

Brit: Dewy skin (put your lotion on right out of the shower to maintain a glow), chapstick, concealer, bronzer and mascara – red lips always makes it look like you tried hard as well!

CeeCee: Ohh good tip! What do you never leave home without?

Brit: Concealer and natural chapstick.

CeeCee: What product is your go-to skin saviour?

Brit: Oil face cleansers, they are the only way I believe you can clean your skin without stripping the natural oils from your skin. They are also great at lifting oil based makeup.

CeeCee: Do you have a signature scent? If so, what is it?

Brit: People always say I smell amazing but it is literally a blend of all of my natural products and essential oils! I am into Le Labo perfumes right now as well and I love sandalwood.

CeeCee: What is your favourite book?

Brit: A New Earth

CeeCee: What is your favourite movie?

Brit: Dumb and Dumbier.

CeeCee: A classic. Who is your favourite artist?

Brit: NATURE!!

CeeCee: Where is your favourite place to see art? City? Gallery name?

Brit: NATURE!!

CeeCee: What’s your ideal night out?

Brit: An amazing dinner that lasts longer than 4 hours and gets you unintentionally tipsy because everyone is connecting so hard that you all dance on the table to celebrate!

CeeCee: What’s your favourite board game?

Brit: Cranium haha!

CeeCee: What song gets you up on your feet?

Brit: Anything that is chill electronic with a touch of world beats like african drums or cumbia! I love music that blends old and new sounds!

CeeCee: What are the 3 things in your bag that you can’t live without?

Brit: MOLESKIN – journal/notebook, computer and/or cell, chapstick/concealer

CeeCee: Now I know you’ve travelled to a lot of different places but what’s still on your list?

Brit: Bali and the Maldives.

CeeCee: What’s your favourite place to visit?

Brit: Any new place that I haven’t been yet.

CeeCee: What is your favourite food?

Brit: Anything Italian.

CeeCee: What is your favourite dessert?

Brit: CHOCOLATE!!

CeeCee: Favourite restaurant?

Brit: Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur.

CeeCee: What’s your favourite way to exercise?

Brit: Yoga, Hiking, Snowboarding, Watersports – I’m newly into surfing.

CeeCee: How do you decompress?

Brit: All of the above – and travel.

CeeCee: Thanks so much for taking the time to talk to me! We’re very excited to collaborate with you over the next couple of months.
