Style in Cannes: Flashback to the 2016 Cannes Film Festival

Taking summer fashion inspiration from the stars

By Guest Blogger: Kathryn Senkow, Coquitlam Centres’s Summer ‘Girl in Focus’ Marketer, Writer + Actress

In May I had the opportunity to attend the 69th Festival de Cannes in the beautiful French Riviera. I was there representing a short film I starred in last year called “Reminiscence”. It was my first time and, it was definitely a learning experience. For more on my perspective as an actor/producer, have a look at my blog post, Ups and Downs: 5 Things I Learned at the Cannes Film Festival.

Today, though, we’re talking about fashion.

It’s odd packing for a trip where anything, and nothing, could happen. In the weeks prior to departing, I was stressed about not having enough dresses. I begged, borrowed and stole (not really) fancy outfits from friends and family. H&M and Coquitlam Centre gifted me a beautiful floor length white lace dress for the red carpet that I fell in love with during a photoshoot. I was set!
Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to wear it. I knew it would be hard to get my hand on a gala screening ticket but… it was next to impossible.

There was no shortage of stunning looks on the carpet this year. One of my favourites was Kristen Stewart’s styling at the premiere of the film “Personal Shopper". I happened to be in the right place at the right time, and when I saw her get out of the car I exclaimed “Yasss!”. I wanted to high-five her from across the street! The detailing of that Chanel dress was even better in person. Those sleeves! She paired it with a bold eye and killer heels. Kristen oozed confidence - you could tell she loved the look too. Just the right amount of edge and personality.

Unless you have “Attend Red Carpet Premiere” in your day timer this summer, may I suggest we shift our gaze towards what the stars wore to afternoon photocalls?

On the day of their gala premiere, filmmakers make an appearance on the Festival Grounds to have their photos taken together, and then head to the 3rd floor of the Palais where they hold a Press Conference. Then, back to their hotels to prepare for the red carpet.

At the photocalls I noticed a trend towards soft, romantic pieces and summer whites. Charlize Theron (who I got to see in person) was there for a film called “The Last Face”, directed by Sean Penn and co-staring Javier Bardem. Her dress, as well as “Paterson” actress Golshifteh Farahani’s, featured feminine lace detailing.

Another actress looking gorgeous in summer whites was Ana de Armas from the film “Hands of Stone”. The dress was elevated by an almost lapel-like neckline. Her hair was in loose, casual, beachy waves perfect for the venue.

French actress Adèle Exarchopoulos chose a dress that stood out from the bunch, with bold colours and interesting patterns. I loved the short length and accentuated shoulders.

I’ll definitely be taking inspiration from these Cannes looks for events this summer.
