Fall has fallen which means it’s time to introduce a new ‘Girl in Focus’! We’re super excited to announce that this season’s ‘Girl’ in Jamie Dunlop Khau!

Jamie is a mother of three girls and founder of the amazing local lifestyle and family blog; Styling The Inside. Jamie is passionate about promoting positive well-being and inspiring others to live a life that feels good on the inside. In addition, she is a digital brand ambassador and has worked with many brands, big and small including Big Sisters BC, Raw Beauty Talks, Dove’s Inspire Confidence campaign, TELUS, and more.

You can find her writing, reading, exercising, socializing at media events, and giving back to the community; (One Girl Can is a registered charity based in Vancouver she loves to support) when she isn’t busy with mommy duties!

Fun Facts: She can never say no to a slice of pizza, she’s talks way too much (sometimes in a terrible British accent), she finds her best outfits under pressure, and her youngest daughter cracks everyone up with her shameless dance moves.

CeeCee: Hi Jamie! We’re so excited to have you as our Fall 2018 “Girl in Focus”. Let’s dive right in, what’s your biggest strength?

Jamie: I believe my biggest strength is tuning into my intuition. This has helped me both personally and professionally make choices that are aligned with my true self.

CeeCee: What a great strength to have! What are your goals for 2018?

Jamie: I like to call my goals intentions. My intention for 2018 is to be more compassionate with myself.

CeeCee: Ooh I like that! Both calling them “intentions” over goals – seems way less overwhelming somehow, and I love that your intention is to be more compassionate with yourself! So, what’s your next big intention?

Jamie: My next big intention is to passionately go forward with purpose driven-storytelling through a video channel and on stage.

CeeCee: Very cool! Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Jamie: I see myself having the freedom to travel more.

CeeCee: Yeah, I guess with three busy girls at home and with all the things you do, travelling can be a bit tricky! Looking back at everything you’ve accomplished this year, what’s was the best thing that has happened to you in 2018.

Jamie: So many best things have happened this past year, and if I had to choose one it would be being asked to be the cover girl for the Body & Soul Issue of “I like Her Style Vancouver” magazine.

CeeCee: That is definitely very cool – and well deserved! What’s the best piece of personal advice you have ever received?

Jamie: It’s a quote from a mentor I had growing up: “If you know your own heart, and think the truth, you will always have a friend who doesn’t lie”

CeeCee: I LOVE that! I know “your truth” is a big topic on your blog. Speaking of your blog, what made you decide to start a blog?

Jamie: My passion for writing and storytelling and struggles growing up. I wanted to create a place people could go to on a deeper level. What began as an online journal has turned into so much more!

CeeCee: It certainly has! What do you hope that people learn or take away from your blog?

Jamie: To live a life that feels good within. I want people to leave my blog feeling less alone. I want my readers to know that life is messy and complicated, and beautiful!

CeeCee: What does “creating a life that feels good on the inside” mean to you?

Jamie: It means doing the work. It means going below the surface. We have to dig deep. It means personal growth.

CeeCee: What made you decide to share your life on Instagram?

Jamie: I kind of just began sharing and kept on sharing!

CeeCee: Haha! Please keep sharing! What do you hope that people take away from your Instagram feed?

Jamie: I hope they take away the message that they’re not alone. We all struggle. And creating a life that feels good within is a lifelong journey.

CeeCee: Aww. Talk to us about collaborating with other female influencers. What have you learned? Discovered about yourself?

Jamie: I love collaboration! I always get my best ideas and energy when I’m with other females. I have learned that it truly does take a village, and one of my favourite quotes is, “alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much”.

CeeCee: So true! Ok, let’s talk style! How would you describe your style?

Jamie: Comfortable and casual.

CeeCee: Who’s your fashion icon?

Jamie: I have always loved Victoria Beckham.

CeeCee: Haha, she is definitely not “comfortable and casual” have you seen her heels? Although to be fair, she does look super comfortable in those heels. So what are your favourite stores at Coquitlam Centre?

Jamie: H&M, Below the Belt and Privilege.

CeeCee: What are your top tricks for making any outfit look polished?

Jamie: Throwing on a good pair of shoes.

CeeCee: I agree! Top tricks for getting out of the house in a hurry?

Jamie: Hats! They are such a lifesaver especially when you don’t have time to wash your hair.

CeeCee: Haha story of my life – or I guess in my case it’s “if I don’t wash my hair today, then I can sleep longer”!  Who are some of your “favourites” on social media? Who do you follow for inspiration?

Jamie: I love following Jillian Harris. Love all the outfits she pulls together.

CeeCee: What Fall trends are you most excited about this season?

Jamie: All the cozy, oversized sweaters and I LOVE the paperbag-waist pants!

CeeCee: ME TOO! Paperbag-waist pants are definitely on the top of my list! So comfortable yet SO stylish! What’s your must-have item this Fall?

Jamie: Definitely the paperbag-waist pants!

CeeCee: If you could only wear one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Jamie: Oh my goodness, it would be have to be a comfy pair of pants!

CeeCee: What are some of your favourite beauty products?

Jamie: I’m obsessed with Anastasia lip glosses and Laura Mercier for the face!

CeeCee: What’s your top beauty “hack”?

Jamie: Faking my winged eyeliner! Just simply adding a bit of liner at the end of my eye saves so much time.

CeeCee: Ooooh you’re going to have to show me that one! Top beauty trick for getting out the door fast and still looking great?

Jamie: Tinted moisturizer!

CeeCee: What product is your go-to skin saviour?

Jamie: Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer.

CeeCee: Haha, you really LOVE your tinted moisturizer don’t you? What’s your favourite book?

Jamie: “The Glass Castle” is my favourite memoir and “The Gifts of Imperfection” by Brene Brown.

CeeCee: I also love “The Glass Castle”. Ideal night out?

Jamie: Girls Night! Love me a good wine night with my girls!

CeeCee: Haha, me too! Ideal night in?

Jamie: Movies on the couch with the family.

CeeCee: Favourite thing to do with your kids?

Jamie: Being outdoors at the beach or on hikes.

CeeCee: What are the three things in your bag that you can’t live without?

Jamie: Lipgloss, chapstick and a compact.

CeeCee: Favourite food?

Jamie: Pizza!

CeeCee: Favourite dessert?

Jamie: Anything with peanut butter.

CeeCee: I love that salty-sweet combo too! What’s your favourite restaurant?

Jamie: Ooh that’s so tough. For casual dining I love Cactus Club.

CeeCee: Always a good choice! Ok, enough food talk – favourite way to exercise?

Jamie: In my basement doing Jillian Michaels at home workouts.

CeeCee: Best way to decompress?

Jamie: Reading, spending time alone, hiking.

CeeCee: Ok hiking is definitely not decompressing to me…way too much energy expenditure hahaha. What’s your guilty pleasure?

Jamie: Eating nutella out of the jar! LOL!

CeeCee: Hahaha, my guilty pleasures are all food-related! What has being a mom taught you about yourself?

Jamie: Being a mom has taught me so many things about myself I never would have learned on my own. It has taught me how to be a positive role model, it has taught me patience, it has taught me how to multitask like a ninja, and it has taught me that trying to balance it all is impossible without help.

CeeCee: Hahaha multitask like a ninja – I love that! You mentioned help, talk to us about the importance of a support system.

Jamie: Without one it’s lonely. You need one to prevent burnout and depletion. You need one to feel connected! And if you’re afraid to ask for help ( I know I have been guilty) I always remember that when we ask others for help it actually isn’t a burden it makes them feel needed and valued.

Jamie: What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from your daughters?

Jamie: The importance of being present and intentional. Time becomes such a precious commodity when you’re a mom. They’ve taught me to slow down and enjoy the moment because time fliessss when you’re raising kids.

CeeCee: Important lessons for anyone. I know that taking care of ourselves is one of the first things that goes when we’re busy. What does self-care mean to you?

Jamie: It isn’t just pedicures and bubble baths. Self-care is also saying no, setting boundaries, being intentional with time, making those much needed health care appointments, making time to connect with others, spending time alone and even having a tough vulnerable conversation. These types of self-care aren’t what we’re used to seeing in media, but they are necessary for our overall mental well-being.

CeeCee: Ok, so what are some of your tips for “turning off” when you’re with your family so that you’re really “present”?

Jamie: Charging my phone in another room. Sometimes I want to share everything we’re doing but I also realize it’s important to keep things private too.

CeeCee: Oooh that’s a great tip! What do you hope your girls learn from the opportunities you’ve received as an influencer?

Jamie: When you put yourself out there, anything is possible.

CeeCee: What’s your wish for future generations of girls?

Jamie: I wish the future generation of girls all have the gift of listening to their inner guide. That small voice inside.

CeeCee: So important! What’s your wish for the future?

Jamie: That we are raising a mindful generation of compassionate and empathetic humans.

CeeCee: We definitely need that! And on that note, I think it’s time to say goodbye! Thank you so much for sitting down with me. I can’t wait to dive into Fall fashion with you!
