Spring has sprung (well almost, at least the end is in sight) which means that it’s time to introduce you to our new ‘Girl in Focus’. We’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be working with Bianca Solterbeck this spring.
Bianca is a Leo Award nominated television writer, a television producer and a TV Host. She’s a true Vancouverite who bikes to work, loves the outdoors and boating, oh she might just be addicted to pastries.
CeeCee: What is the best part of your job?
Bianca: No day is ever the same! I can be doing anything from shooting a ‘Top 5 Coffee Shops’ in Vancouver segment, to teaching an on air hosting workshop, to editing a story on a First Nations designer.
CeeCee: That sounds like so much fun! A lot of work, but fun and very interesting. What do you think is your biggest strength?
Bianca: I’m lucky enough to be programmed to positive! I can’t help it! I think a big reason for it is how grateful I am for my family, friends, coworkers and my boyfriend.
CeeCee: What are your goals for 2017?
Bianca: I recently starting writing for Living Magazine and I’d like to do more writing! I have a BA in English Lit so I’m excited to dust off that skill set!
CeeCee: Always nice to put those university degrees to use! What’s your next big life goal?
Bianca: My next big life goal is to eat healthier by learning how to cook. Ahhhh! I mean really cook – from scratch, like my mom did. I’m not a natural in the kitchen but the older I get, the more I recognize the benefits of eating well.
First on the list, seasoning and cooking a chicken breast. Yup, starting small, wish me luck!
CeeCee: Haha – good luck. So besides becoming a top chef, what else are you most excited about these days?
Bianca: I’m most excited about new opportunities! Writing for a magazine and working as a mentor for aspiring TV producers and hosts at Shaw TV are both things that are new to me, but I am really enjoying the challenge!
CeeCee: Sounds like you have some exciting things on the horizon. What was the best thing that happened to you this past year?
Bianca: I went on two incredible trips this past year! I joined my parents, my sister and her husband, plus her baby on a family vacation to Spain. It was so wonderful to spend time with 3 generations of my family and explore Europe.
The second trip was a boat trip I did with my boyfriend and some friends up to Desolation Sound. If you haven’t heard of it, I recommend a quick Google search! It’s another testament to how beautiful British Columbia is. I have my boating license and I recently completed my marine radio course so it was great to help my boyfriend with the boat, instead of just being a passenger. I’m still waiting for him to address me as Captain… 😉
CeeCee: Ahh I’ve been dreaming of Spain for months. It’s definitely on the top of my list at the moment. What is the best advice you’re ever received?
Bianca: Just do it. I am someone who needs everything to be perfect before I consider it ready to put out into the world. That means I sit on a lot of things and sometimes, I never share them. Someone once told me it’s more important to do it, than to think about it too much. So that’s what I try to tell myself when I get stuck and start overthinking things!
CeeCee: Overthinking and trying to make things perfect is definitely one of my biggest stumbling blocks as well. What’s your guilty pleasure?
Bianca: Watching The Bachelor and eating dessert for dinner. See above comment about learning how to cook so I can eat better!!
CeeCee: What is your secret talent?
Bianca: I can yodel. I took 3 years of lessons from a National Champion from Austria when I was a kid. I’m German so my parents thought I should do something that keeps me connected to my heritage. It’s a big hit at Oktoberfest!
CeeCee: WOW! That is very cool. Speaking of your heritage, I understand that you did part of your degree in Germany. What’s the most important thing you learned about yourself while living abroad?
Bianca: I learned that anywhere you go, you will find a network of amazing people who instantly become your family. I spent a year living in Germany as an exchange student and the people I met there (mostly Americans and of course, Germans!) will always be in my life – even if I can’t get to Heidelberg, Houston, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Detroit or Ottawa every year to visit them!
CeeCee: Did you ever think about staying in Europe permanently?
Bianca: I went to university in Heidelberg, Germany for a year and I loved every minute of it! I even went back for a second year. I have to say though, whenever I fly into YVR I get the feeling I’m home. There was no question I would return to Canada.
CeeCee: So as someone who obviously loves Vancouver and gets to explore some really awesome areas, if money were no object what West Coast neighbourhood would you live in?
Bianca: I would live in Lion’s Bay. It feels like a small town but it’s close to DT Vancouver and it’s ridiculously beautiful.
CeeCee: How would you describe your style?
Bianca: I would describe my style as classic. I like structure and colour. I find trends that work for me!
CeeCee: Who is your style icon?
Bianca: My style icon is a mix between Kate Middleton and Jillian Harris.
CeeCee: What style trend are you excited to try this season?
Bianca: I’m excited to wear some distressed girlfriend jeans because those are so not in my wheelhouse! But as soon as I tried the right pair on – I loved them.
CeeCee: YES! Do it! They looked great on you. What’s your must-have item this season?
Bianca: I’ve got to have some white sneakers. I live downtown and walk everywhere so I’ll probably live in them.
CeeCee: White sneakers are a must – and so versatile. Who are your favourite Coquitlam Centre retailers?
Bianca: So many great retailers! I love Hudson’s Bay, Privilege, Plenty and I’ve found some really awesome pieces at Reitmans!
CeeCee: Yes, Reitmans is killing it right now. What are your go-to accessories?
Bianca: I love belts, purses and necklaces. I’m in a ring phase right now though!
CeeCee: What would you never wear?
Bianca: Haha, I love this question. Pajama pants in public!
CeeCee: Why would anyone? Especially when there are so many cute sweats and leggings out there. What is the best fashion secret you’ve ever learned?
Bianca: Take risks but stay true to what makes you feel good. Also, anytime I see someone wearing something I love; I compliment them and ask where they got it!
CeeCee: Oh, good tip. If you had to wear one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Bianca: I would wear a cashmere onesie!
CeeCee: Haha, that COULD be considered pajamas. What are your favourite beauty products?
Bianca: After wearing a full face of make-up for about 20 years, I’m now on the less is more train! It feels so good to go to bed without spending 8-10 minutes scrapping make-up off my face! I love a good organic mineral foundation (GloMinerals), blush (Mineral Fusion) and eyebrow crème (MAC). That’s my 3 step program to looking natural and polished! PS, I have eyelash extensions so I can skip mascara 🙂
CeeCee: I am also a lover of mineral foundation, so nice on your skin. Isn’t it funny how as we get older, we tend to wear less makeup than when we’re younger? What’s your beauty trick for getting out the door fast and still looking great?
Bianca: I always have a compact in my purse and lipstick. The lipstick doubles as blush and the compact gives me great coverage. The compact has a mirror so I can apply both products practically anywhere!
CeeCee: What do you never leave home without?
Bianca: My phone. I haven’t forgotten it at home since 2008.
CeeCee: That is impressive! What product is your go-to skin saviour?
Bianca: I’m still working on that! I have yet to find the perfect moisturizer. I just ordered Dr Hauschka’s Tinted Day Cream… fingers crossed!
CeeCee: Let me know how it goes! Do you have a signature scent?
Bianca: Hypnotic Poison by Dior. Can’t stop, won’t stop. Have been wearing it for years.
CeeCee: What is your favourite book?
Bianca: Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea
CeeCee: Favourite author?
Bianca: Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Jean Rhys
CeeCee: What is your favourite movie?
Bianca: The Shawshank Redemption
CeeCee: Where is your favourite place to read?
Bianca: On a beach or by the fire.
CeeCee: What’s your ideal night out?
Bianca: I love to get my closest 6 girlfriends together for dinner and drinks. We’re all busy but when we figure out how to get everyone together, there is so much to catch up on. It’s free therapy and your stomach hurts from laughing!
CeeCee: What song gets you up on your feet?
Bianca: Ok, this is before my time but Suspicious Minds by Elvis is so darn catchy. I also love Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and some of those one hit wonders from the 80s!
CeeCee: What are 3 things in your bag you can’t live without?
Bianca: My purse always has my RayBan sunglasses in it, a compact and headphones!
CeeCee: What country have you always wanted to visit?
Bianca: Greece. Santorini looks like paradise!
CeeCee: Favourite place to visit? Why?
Bianca: I visit Germany alot because I was born there. I’ve been to many different cities like Berlin, Munich and Hamburg but Heidelberg, where I went to University, feels like a second home. I love the German bakeries, the Christmas market, looking up at the Heidelberger Schloss (castle) and walking the cobblestone streets through the Old Town or Altstadt.
CeeCee: What is your favourite food?
Bianca: You can always win me over with anything in a bakery. A pretzel, a baguette with cheese, a custard dessert or an apple tart – it’s pretty much my happy place!
CeeCee: Very European. What’s your least favourite food?
Bianca: I can’t do fast food burgers. I always find myself wishing the bun was brioche and the cheese was an aged cheddar etc…so yes, I’m a burger snob, but I love a good burger!
CeeCee: I agree, there are a lot of bad burgers out there that could be made so much better with the right cheese. What is your favourite dessert?
Bianca: Cheesecake, custard, chocolate pudding, cream puffs, apple strudel, cupcakes, donuts, rhubarb pie… I can’t pick just one!! #sweettooth
CeeCee: Soooo pretty much anything :). What’s your favourite restaurant?
Bianca: My favourite restaurant is La Quercia on West 4th – the food is incredible! It will ruin you for other restaurants.
CeeCee: Haha, sounds like I know where I’m going on my next date night. Ok so pastries, cheese, chocolate, Italian…please tell me you have to exercise A LOT to stay as tiny as you are.
Bianca: I’ve tried every kind of spin, barre, gym you can think of. I finally decided to invest a little and now I work out with a personal trainer (Shout out to Jim Diehl!) twice a week. I love that every session is different, and I don’t have to think. We’re working on building strength and fitness as opposed to losing weight! I also try to ride my bike to work as much as possible. It accomplishes two things- it’s good for me and it gets me to work.
CeeCee: You’ve posted some GREAT bike to work looks on Instagram. Besides exercise, what’s the best way to decompress?
Bianca: Drinks with friends, dinner with my boyfriend or a trip to Vancouver Island to visit my family. Also, shopping!! I love a little retail therapy. Coquitlam Centre, with all the beautiful woodwork makes it so pleasant and inviting to escape the daily grind and wander into stores to look at clothes!
CeeCee: Thanks so much for sitting down with me. We’re really excited to explore spring fashion with you!
